Are there other ways to get into wind without having to go back to school?
Yes. Although a significant amount of jobs in wind require specialization, there are some options if you are not interested in going back to school.
Transition with Existing Companies/Services
Many existing companies are beginning to transition into wind and/or create a new arm of their company where wind seems to naturally fit. For example, a financing firm may create a wind energy branch specifically for these projects. Or a cell tower company may begin to specialize in wind turbine towers. So, do a little research to see if firms already exist in your area of interest before putting yourself through new training or school.
Intern and Interview
Call a company that does work that you are interested in and ask if they take interns, or if they could use some help as volunteer. If they say no, consider asking them about the background of their current employees. Some companies will be more open to this than others, but it doesn’t hurt to respectfully try. If it seems that they are short and too busy to talk, don’t push it. Thank them and move on.
