Community Wind across America conferences to reach Great Lakes and Northeast regions in 2011

Windustry is pleased to announce two Community Wind across America regional conferences in the coming months

June 24- 26, 2011: The Michigan Energy Fair, Ludington, Michigan

Windustry is excited to partner with Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association to present a full Community and Small Wind program at the 6th annual Michigan Energy Fair at the Mason County Fairgrounds. Topics include: Wind Energy Basics; Introduction to Community Wind; Case Studies of Community and Small Wind; Small Wind Assessment; Landowner Leasing and pooling; Wind Siting and Zoning in Michigan.

Registration for the Michigan Energy Fair includes attending the Community and Small Wind program. You may Register Online in advance or at the fair gates.

Community Wind Across America regional conferences are made possible in part by grant from the Department of Energy, as part of the 20% Wind by 2030 Initiative, to bring hundreds of stakeholders together to learn from each other and experts in the renewable energy field.  Since 2010, Windustry has held conferences in the Colorado for the Rocky Mountain region; Minnesota for the Midwest, and Pennsylvania for the Mid Atlantic.

Environmental Assessments in the Great Lakes Region Webinar

This webinar was hosted by Windustry with support from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory on May 18, 2010. The webinar provided a discussion of discuss environmental assessments for land-based wind energy development in and near communities along the Great Lakes.

Meeting on Great Lakes Regional Wind Energy

The Meeting on Great Lakes Regional Wind Energy was held on March 1-2, 2010 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Traverse City, MI: Community Wind Project

Traverse City, Michigan was the first municipal utility in the state to install a utility scale turbine in 1996.

Traverse City Light & Power Wind Generator
DESCRIPTION:

In June 1996, Traverse City Light & Power dedicated the first utility scale wind turbine generator in Michigan. The wind turbine is a Vestas model V-44, 600 kW generator and has a blade diameter of 144 ft. on a 160 ft. tower. The wind turbine has a variable blade pitch mechanism which can capture the most energy from winds. In average annual winds of between 14-15 mph the annual production from the wind turbine is estimated between 1.1-1.2 million kWh's which is enough electricity for approximately 200 average Traverse City homes. The capital cost of approximately $650,000 was partially funded by a $50,000 grant from the State of Michigan and the U.S. Dept. of Energy's State Energy Program.

Mackinaw City, MI: Community Wind Project

Mackinaw City's Wind Turbines

In 2001, Mackinaw City leased Village-owned land for the construction of two wind turbines by a private developer. Along with generating energy, the turbines are currently used to train new professional wind turbine technicians from Michigan’s Kalamazoo Valley Community College as part of their curriculum.
